A fresh political flashpoint has erupted over yesterday’s address to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as the opposition has moved the Election Commission of India (ECI) over an alleged Model Code of Conduct (MCC) breach.
In a letter addressed to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, CPI leader in the Rajya Sabha Sandosh Kumar P. raised concerns over PM Modi’s address amid ongoing elections. The letter alleged that the speech was political in tone and content, containing partisan remarks and attempts to influence public opinion at a time when elections are underway in multiple states.

Use of public broadcasters questioned
The CPI leader also objected to the broadcast of the Prime Minister’s address on state-run platforms such as Doordarshan and Sansad TV. He argued that using publicly funded broadcasters to air a political speech amounted to the misuse of state resources during the enforcement of the MCC.
The complaint said such actions disturb the level playing field that the Election Commission is expected to maintain during elections.
Call for probe and accountability
In the letter, the opposition leader urged the Election Commission to take immediate notice of the matter, initiate an inquiry and ensure accountability. He warned that failure to act could raise questions about the Commission’s neutrality and weaken public trust in the electoral process.
The Election Commission has not yet issued an official response to the allegations.
